What a Safari Blue day includes

Safari Blue fits a whole day at sea into one trip, and the operator says everything is included, from snorkelling equipment to food and drinks2. The Original Experience covers:

Lunch on Kwale Island6

  • guided snorkelling, with all equipment provided1
  • dolphin watching1, in a bay where 160 resident bottlenose dolphins were recorded in 19984
  • a stop on a sandbank1
  • a swim in a mangrove lagoon1, which GoWithGuide says you visit when the tide is high5
  • lunch: a Swahili seafood barbecue, then a tasting of island fruit1

Lunch is at Safari Blue’s restaurant and Sand Bar, on the corner of the beach on Kwale Island6. Kwale Island lies inside the Menai Bay marine conservation area7, which is Zanzibar’s largest marine protected area at 470 km²4. The company has run the trip since 19952.

Transfers and pickups

Getting to Fumba from Stone Town

Safari Blue trips start from Fumba village, a 20 to 30-minute drive12 from Stone Town. Fumba sits in Unguja’s south-west, at the end of the Fumba Peninsula13.

20–30 minute drive12

  1. Sort your transfer

Safari Blue's price covers everything except transport to and from Fumba, which you book separately.

  2. Or pay for a pickup

For an extra fee, Safari Blue can collect you from your hotel and bring you back.

  3. Drive to Fumba

Guests are taken to Fumba village, south-west of Zanzibar Town.

  4. Board on Fumba beach

Tour boats, Safari Blue's among them, sit along Fumba beach with the local fishing boats.

Without a car, a hotel pickup is the simplest way to go. Tour companies that sell the trip with transfers quote these times:

Typical hotel pickup and return times

African Spice Safaris (tour company); Easy Travel (tour company)

Hotel pickup

  • 07:00 beach hotels
  • 08:30 Stone Town

Back at your hotel

  • About 5:00 pm

These are two tour companies' times, not Safari Blue's own; confirm with whoever you book.

Staying at a beach hotel further out, say in Jambiani or Kiwengwa? Expect the earlier beach-hotel pickup, and a transfer whose price Safari Blue says depends on where you stay3. For those bases, see Jambiani’s village and beach and the Kiwengwa page.

Driving yourself and want to stay on for dinner? Membe Kayak Club calls itself one of the best beachfront restaurants near Fumba and opens every day from lunchtime to 9pm14. The Fumba area guide covers the village itself.

Families and swimmers

Who Safari Blue suits

Safari Blue suits most travellers who are happy on a boat all day: GoWithGuide calls it suitable for all ages and fitness levels5. Plan for a long day, since operators put it at 612 to 9 hours11.

Under-6s go free3

  • Families: under-6s go free3, and the child rate covers ages 6 to 142.
  • Less confident swimmers: African Spice Safaris hands out inflatable snorkelling vests for beginners12; ask whether your operator does too.
  • Sociable solo travellers: Safari Blue pitches the shared trip at people who want to make new friends on board and snorkel with a guide2.
  • Couples and groups wanting privacy: the Bubble Boat gives you a private boat and a private table2 at the Kwale Island restaurant.

Other sea trips to compare

If a full day in Menai Bay isn’t quite what you’re after, weigh it against these:

  • Dhow sunset cruise: Wikivoyage reckons traditional dhow boats make for a wonderful sunset cruise15, a short evening on the water.
  • Prison Island: Go Smart’s Prison Island tour lasts 3–4 hours and starts at US$60 per person16. See Prison Island boat trips.
  • Prison Island and Nakupenda Beach: prisonislandzanzibar.com runs a 6-hour combined trip at US$65 per traveller17; compare Nakupenda sandbank tour options.
  • Turtles: for a swim with sea turtles instead, look at Salaam Cave tours.
