Thumb of the south-east coast

The peninsula at a glance

The Michamvi Peninsula is a quiet strip of beach resorts and small villages on Unguja4, Zanzibar’s main island. Bwejuu lies immediately south of the peninsula5.

Bwejuu lies just south5

You’ll see these place names on booking sites:

  • Kae: not a separate village but the beach area of Michamvi, on the shore of Chwaka Bay directly west of Pingwe6. TUI calls it a barely-there village7.
  • Pingwe: one of two villages at the peninsula’s northern tip4, home to Pingwe Beach and The Rock Restaurant.
  • Dongwe: the other end of the resort strip. Discover Africa says the luxury resorts are scattered along the beach between Dongwe and Pingwe village1.

Evenings on Chwaka Bay

Kae beach and the sunset side

Michamvi Kae Beach is the reason most people pick this peninsula: TUI says it’s one of the only places on Zanzibar’s east coast where you can see the sunset7. The beach faces Chwaka Bay6, and TUI mentions a sprinkling of beach bars set up for the sunset7.

Lunch on a rock

Pingwe Beach and The Rock Restaurant

Pingwe Beach is the place for a long seafood lunch by the water. In 20184 it was named one of the world’s best beaches in the ‘Special Ambience’ category.

About 30 m off the beach1

The Rock Restaurant sits on a rock in the ocean off Pingwe Beach8. Discover Africa puts its coral outcrop about 30 metres1 off the sand: close enough to see from your towel, far enough to get your feet wet.

The Rock’s own website lists these prices. Its signature grill platter includes lobster, king prawns, octopus and calamari8.

Beyond the beach

Things to do nearby

Most days here are beach days, but a few outings are worth planning:

  • Sunset at Kae: the bars on the bay are the evening plan.
  • Lunch at The Rock: time it with the tide.
  • Jozani Forest: the national park has nature trails9; read up on the guided forest walk and mangrove boardwalk before you go.
  • Paje: the village known for kiteboarding9, on the same east coast. See Paje’s kitesurf village and beaches.
  • Kayaking: The Loop Beach Resort Zanzibar says its guests can use the resort’s Water Sport Centre, kayaks included10.

If you’d rather not arrange the Jozani visit yourself, this tour picks you up and covers the entry fees.

Where to stay on the peninsula

Places to stay here are beach resorts, and Michamvi Sunset Bay is the one with checked prices. Halalbooking gives the lower rate; Priceline’s higher one includes all fees.

Agent rates from US$2062

The resort describes itself as a tropical paradise resort11. It’s on Chwaka Bay11, just steps from Kae beach2, so the sunset is on your doorstep.

  • Size: 20 rooms11; the Family Room sleeps up to four12.
  • Meals: bed and breakfast, half board or full board13.
  • Children: there’s a kids’ pool, and children aged 3 and under stay free2 in their parents’ room, using the existing bedding.
  • Extra cost: a city tax of US$5 per person per night2.

Other resorts on the peninsula:

  • Konokono Beach Resort: on the peninsula, on Zanzibar’s south-east coast15.
  • Pearl Beach by Sansi: Wikivoyage calls it a peaceful hotel on the northern end of Zanzibar’s southern east coast16. Its Garden Bungalow sleeps up to 4 people17.

Transfers

How do you get to Michamvi from the airport?

Book a private transfer before you land: Taxi Trip Zanzibar charges US$5018 (checked October 2026) for a sedan from the airport. Pearl Beach by Sansi says it’s about an hour and a half’s drive17 from the airport, which gives you a rough idea of the ride.

Taxi Trip Zanzibar’s prices are per vehicle, not per person18, so filling the car cuts the cost per head. The airport is about 5 km9 south of Zanzibar City, whose historic centre is Stone Town19; see Stone Town’s old quarter if you’re starting or ending there.

Getting around the peninsula

Once you’re here, getting about is mostly short hops:

  • Taxi from Paje: Wikivoyage puts a return taxi from Paje to The Rock at about TSh 40,00020.
  • Vespa: hire runs about US$25 a day20, by the same Wikivoyage count.
  • On foot to Kae: the final stretch is the rocky beach track, so walk it in daylight if you can.
