How the island is split

What are the main areas of Zanzibar?

Unguja and its surrounding islands are divided into three regions4, each with its own capital. For planning, that means the capital region, the north, and the centre and south.

Zanzibar North
Mkokotoni4

Koani4

Zanzibar City is the main settlement on Unguja, and it includes Stone Town and other populated areas such as Michenzani4. Outside the city, the other major settlements are:

  • Mbweni4
  • Mangapwani4
  • Chwaka4

Costs: rooms and marine fees by area

Stone Town has the cheapest beds, and rooms at the beaches are often more expensive2. Wikivoyage warns that Zanzibar doesn’t offer much cheap accommodation2, so tight budgets go furthest in town.

Nungwi has a backpacker option too: Hostel 197 lists dorms from US$20 and private rooms from US$805 a night.

Boat days in Mnemba or Menai Bay add a marine conservation fee: non-East African visitors pay US$10 per adult per day6 (checked October 2026).

Choose your base

Which area suits whom

Pick your base by what you’ll do most days: town for history, the north for resorts, the east for kites and quiet, the south for dolphins.

  • Choose Stone Town if you want history on foot. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site1, and the airport is about 5 km2 south of Zanzibar City. Start with Stone Town.
  • Choose Nungwi if you want a resort town with everything from hostel dorms to family all-inclusives. Hotel Riu Jambo pitches itself for family holidays7. There’s more on the Nungwi page.
  • Choose Kendwa if you want to be near Nungwi but stay in a small fishing village, a couple of miles2 away.
  • Choose Paje if you kiteboard or want fewer hawkers: Paje keeps a laid-back feel, with fewer beach boys and merchants on the beach8.
  • Choose Jambiani if you like small, simple places. The village has many small hotels and guesthouses2, and its calm, shallow water is popular for kitesurfing9.
  • Choose Matemwe if quiet matters most: it’s one of the quieter coastal destinations3. The Matemwe guide has the details.
  • Choose Kizimkazi if dolphins are the point: the village is the starting point for dolphin tours2.
  • Choose Fumba if you want Menai Bay on your doorstep, as Fumba sits on Menai Bay10. Read the Fumba guide.

If you’d rather spend a day on a dhow than pick a beach, the Safari Blue lagoon trip includes snorkelling and lunch.

Names in hotel addresses

Smaller places on the map

These four names turn up in searches and hotel addresses. Here’s what each one is.

West Zanzibar

West Zanzibar is the region around the capital. Mjini Magharibi Region, also called Zanzibar Urban West, is split into two districts11, Magharibi and Mjini.

Its capital is Zanzibar City4. Up the north-west coast, Sea Cliff Resort & Spa is in Kama Village, Mangapwani12, and the resort says it’s twenty-five minutes13 from Stone Town.

Unguja Ukuu

Unguja Ukuu is a historic Swahili settlement on the south-western side14 of Unguja. Wikipedia calls it one of the first East African trading posts14, with finds from all over the world.

It’s also the island’s most notable archaeological site, according to Wikivoyage, and it lies just north of the causeway to the Uzi Islands2.

Kibigija

Kibigija is a beach name you’ll see in Jambiani hotel addresses. Sea View Lodge Boutique Hotel’s listing on KAYAK puts it on Kibigija Beach, 0.4 miles15 from the centre of Jambiani. For the village itself, see the Jambiani page.

Pwani Mchangani

Pwani Mchangani is a traditional village on Zanzibar’s north-east coast16. TUI says a stay there suits travellers who want a taste of everyday island life, with sandy streets lined with traditional homes and a handful of local eateries16.

Daily News calls it one of the island’s most pristine and quiet beaches17. At low tide here and in neighbouring Kiwengwa, you’ll see seaweed farming, mostly run by local women17. The Kiwengwa area guide covers the next beach along.
