Island flavours
What to try
Zanzibari food mixes Bantu, Arab, Portuguese, Indian, British and Chinese2 cooking. Omani and Persian arrivals brought spices, coconut, mango, citrus and rice2 to an island once known as the Spice Island1.
Pilau: rice, coconut, nuts and spices2
Pilau
Biryani and curry
Chipsi mayai
If you’d like to see where the spices come from before you eat them, the Swahili Spice Experience spice tour and culinary journey pairs a farm visit with food.
Old town and beach villages
Where to eat and drink
You’ll eat either in Stone Town, the historic centre of Zanzibar City on Unguja (Zanzibar Island)5, or at the beach villages. On the coast, nearly all beach hotels have restaurants serving typical Western food, and quality varies1.
Forodhani food market: nightly1
- Stone Town: Forodhani Gardens is a nightly food market by the water, and possibly the cheapest food on the island1. Some find it overrated because the food quality can be mixed1. More on the Forodhani night market and gardens. Sit-down options include Lukmaan Swahili Restaurant, Emerson Spice Hotel and 6 Degrees South.
- Nungwi: Mama Mia says it serves local fish and seafood, pasta, wood-fired pizzas and artisanal gelato on the beach in Nungwi6. Terrace Nungwi, Skybar Zanzibar by Nungwi Dreams and Nanasi Beach Club Zanzibar are on the same stretch.
- Kendwa: the village is a couple of miles from Nungwi1, with Kendwa Rocks Beach Hotel and Sunset Kendwa among the places to eat.
- Michamvi: The Rock Restaurant Zanzibar sits on a rock in the ocean off Michamvi Pingwe Beach7. It says its signature grill platter includes lobster, king prawns, octopus and calamari7. See the Michamvi and Pingwe coast.
- Paje: a small east-coast village known for kiteboarding1, with Mr. Kahawa Café-Restaurant, Paje Beach, Bento - Paje Food Court and Shanga Restaurant Paje.
- Jambiani: a fishing village that stretches along the beach1, with The Loop Beach Resort, Fadhil Restaurant and LOST SOLES LODGE.
- Matemwe: Bin Jabir Restaurant Matemwe is the place listed here.
Stone Town makes an easy first or last meal of a trip: the airport is about 5 km south of Zanzibar City1. Flight details are on the page about getting to Zanzibar by air.

Bars, juice and coffee
Drinks and nightlife
You can get a drink in the tourist areas, but be discreet when drinking alcohol1. Rules get stricter during Ramadan.
Ramadan alcohol ban outside tourist areas8
Can you drink alcohol in Zanzibar?
Yes. The population is almost entirely Muslim5, but small bars can be found everywhere and beach bars sell local beer and cocktails1. In Nungwi, Mama Mia has a cocktail bar6.
Juice, soda and Zanzibar coffee
Not drinking? These are the drinks to look for:
- Sugar cane juice and fresh coconut milk: sold mainly in Stone Town1. Wikivoyage recommends the local sugar cane juice at Forodhani1.
- Tangawizi: not a beer but a soda with a spicy ginger flavour1.
- Coffee: Zanzibar Coffee House is in the middle of Stone Town, near Mkunazini market9. The company says its coffee is grown by its sister company, Utengule Estate, in Tanzania’s Southern Highlands9.
Cash, cards and Ramadan
Practical
Bring cash in shillings and check the Ramadan dates before you book. Both change how and when you eat.
Card surcharge: sometimes 5%1
Paying for meals
- Currency: the Tanzanian shilling (Tsh)1. Prices are sometimes quoted in euros or dollars, but generally only shillings are accepted1.
- Cards: shops that accept bank cards are rare1. Bigger restaurants and hotels generally accept them, sometimes with a 5% surcharge1 (checked October 2026).
- ATMs: there are several, for example in Stone Town, Jambiani and Nungwi1.
- Changing dollars: US$50 and $100 notes get a better exchange rate than $20 and $10 notes1.
Ramadan and eating hours
| Ramadan | Expected dates |
|---|---|
| 1448 AH1 | 8 February – 8 March 20271 (checked October 2026) |
| 1449 AH1 | 28 January – 25 February 20281 |
What it means for your meals:
- Most restaurants stay closed until the fast breaks at dusk1.
- Alcohol sales are banned in non-tourist areas during Ramadan8.
- Plan meals around dusk, when the fast breaks.

Questions people ask
What is the best beach club in Zanzibar?
This guide doesn't rank places. Nanasi Beach Club Zanzibar in Nungwi is in the table, and beach bars sell local beer and cocktails.
What is the best restaurant in Stone Town, Zanzibar?
Nothing here is ranked. For a cheap meal, Forodhani is possibly the cheapest food on the island; the table lists Stone Town's restaurants side by side.
