Zanzibar City's historic core

What the old town is like

Zanzibar does have a city: Zanzibar City1, the capital, and Stone Town is part of Zanzibar City3, its old core. The UNESCO area covers just 96 ha3, so the inner city is small and easy to explore on foot2.

UNESCO World Heritage Site since 20002

What you’ll notice as you walk:

  • The alleys: a maze of narrow alleys lined with houses, shops, bazaars and mosques3.
  • The buildings: a mix of Arab, Persian, Indian and European3 elements.
  • The baraza: a long stone bench along the outside walls3 of traditional houses.

The town’s wealth came from trade: it was a flourishing centre of the spice trade and the Indian Ocean slave trade in the 19th century3. Expect heat whatever the month, with monthly averages of 25.1–28.8 °C6.

For the beach bases, such as Nungwi on the northern tip of the island or Paje, known for kiteboarding2, see the guide to towns and cities in Zanzibar.

Planning your time

Is Stone Town worth a visit?

Yes: Wikivoyage reckons a day here gives you plenty of insight2, and calls it a city of prominent historical and artistic importance7 in East Africa.

That’s enough time for the seafront sights, a hunt for carved doors and dinner at the night market.

Fort, palace and gardens

Sights along the seafront

The big landmarks stand side by side on the seafront. The House of Wonders sits between the Old Fort and the Palace Museum, facing Forodhani Gardens on Mizingani Road8.

  • Forodhani Gardens: a small park on the main sea walk3 that fills with food stalls every evening after sunset7. More in the Forodhani Gardens guide.
  • House of Wonders: a landmark building of the old town8, right on the seafront.
  • Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe): built by the Omanis in 16993, the oldest building in town, and headquarters of the Zanzibar International Film Festival9.
  • Palace Museum: a late 19th-century3 building about the daily life of the Zanzibari royal family.

Wikipedia describes the fort’s courtyard as a cultural centre with curio shops, with dance and music shows in its amphitheatre most evenings9. Ask locally whether that still holds during the works.

Mwananchi reported in January 2026 that the Sauti za Busara festival was moving from the Old Fort to the Mnazi Mmoja grounds11 for that year.

Freddie Mercury Museum

Freddie Mercury was born Farrokh Bulsara in Stone Town, and his family fled Zanzibar for England in spring 196412. The museum in his childhood home on Shangani Street calls itself the world’s only museum dedicated entirely to Freddie Mercury13.

Adult entry is US$8–1014 (checked October 2026), depending on the source. Its own website gives 9am to 8pm daily, while other listings say 10am to 6pm14. The Freddie Mercury Museum page has the visiting details.

The town's signature craft

The carved wooden doors

Fewer than 50 Indian-style doors left15

Carved wooden doors are the best-known feature of Zanzibari houses3, and the old town’s come in two main styles:

  • Indian style: rounded tops3.
  • Omani Arab style: rectangular3, usually flat-topped, with calligraphic inscriptions in Arabic15.

Most are made of teak, often imported from India, or local hardwoods such as mvule and mbambakofi15.

The round-topped ones are the rare find. The Citizen reported in May 2025 that of the 800 carved doors the town had by the late 19th century, fewer than 5015 Indian-style ones are believed to remain.

For a door walk, start at the Tanzanite Museum in Shangani, the former Hindu Girls’ School15, which has one of the finest surviving Gujarati doors. Then follow the merchant houses along Kenyatta Road, Bazaar Street and Cathedral Street15.

Spices, textiles, carvings

Markets and shopping

Darajani Market is where the town buys its food, and it’s the place for spices. It stands on Darajani Road, near the Anglican Cathedral of Christ, and its main structure dates from 190416.

Inside you’ll find seafood, meat, fruit, grains and spices16. Around the old town’s shops, look for:

  • textiles2
  • handmade jewellery2
  • wood or stone carvings2
  • spices2

Eating cheaply by the sea

Food and drink in the old town

Eat cheaply at the Forodhani Gardens night market, then spend a little more on a café lunch or a rooftop beer.

  • Forodhani Gardens night market: stalls every night by the water, and possibly the cheapest food on the island2.
  • Zanzibar Coffee House: a café in the middle of the old town, near Mkunazini market, open every day, 8.30am–6pm18 (checked October 2026).
  • House of Spices: Wikivoyage lists it at US$8–157.
  • The Old Dispensary: a local beer costs TSh 4,0002 at its top-storey bar.
