Getting your bearings

Unguja, Pemba and the smaller islands

Mainland lies to the southwest4

Zanzibar is two large islands, Unguja and Pemba, plus many small ones1. Stone Town, the old heart of the capital, is on the western coast of Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar Archipelago3.

Here’s how the pieces fit together:

  • The Tanzanian mainland lies to the southwest4.
  • Pemba Island lies to the north4 of Unguja.
  • Smaller islands sit off Unguja’s coast: Tumbatu in the northwest, Uzi in the south and Mnemba Atoll in the northeast4.
  • Mnemba Island is about 3 km5 off Unguja’s north-east coast.

Zoom out and Tanzania itself is bordered by Uganda to the northwest, Kenya to the northeast and the Indian Ocean to the east6. The Zanzibar archipelago map guide puts the islands, towns and beaches on a single map.

Part of Tanzania

Is Zanzibar a country?

No: Zanzibar stopped being a separate country in April 19641, when it merged with mainland Tanganyika. Today it’s a semi-autonomous region1 of Tanzania.

Merged with Tanganyika in April 19641

It keeps its own capital, Zanzibar City1 on Unguja. The money you’ll use is the Tanzanian shilling (Tsh)4.

Size and height

How big Unguja and Pemba are

Neither island is large, and Unguja is mainly low-lying1, so don’t pack for hill walks. The table puts Unguja and Pemba side by side.

Town or beach

Towns and beaches on Unguja

Stone Town anchors the west coast; most of the other names you’ll hear are beach villages and resort towns around the rest of Unguja.

Nungwi to Kizimkazi: about 2 hours by taxi4

  • Stone Town: the historic centre of Zanzibar City and a UNESCO World Heritage Site1.
  • Nungwi: a resort town on the northern tip4 of the island; the Nungwi area page has the detail.
  • Kendwa: a small fishing village a couple of miles4 from Nungwi.
  • Matemwe and Kiwengwa: east-coast villages where One Ocean runs Mnemba Atoll trips from its Kiwengwa and Matemwe dive centres7.
  • Paje: a small village on the east coast known for kiteboarding4.
  • Jambiani: a fishing village that stretches along the beach4.
  • Kizimkazi: a small village on the south coast and the starting point for dolphin tours4.

Distances add up more than the map suggests: a taxi from Nungwi to Kizimkazi takes about 2 hours4. If you’d rather drive yourself, read up on renting a car in Zanzibar first.

Your first big decision is town or beach, and which coast. This guide to choosing beach or town stays on Zanzibar walks you through it.

The Spice Island

What Zanzibar is known for

Zanzibar is famous for its history, culture, archaeological sites and white sand beaches4. In practice, that comes down to a handful of things:

  • Spices: Zanzibar, the Spice Island4, was an important stop in the spice trade. Cardamom, ginger, cloves and nutmeg4 are among the spices grown.
  • Work on the islands: the main industries are spices, raffia and tourism1.
  • Reefs and beaches: Unguja has sandy beaches with fringing coral reefs1. On the east coast, VOI Kiwengwa Resort says you can walk out to the reef at low tide8.
  • Forest: Jozani Forest has nature trails4.
