Matemwe, Tanzania: beach, tides, stays and getting there
Village and beach
What Matemwe is like
Matemwe is a fishing village on Zanzibar’s east coast1, in the Unguja North Region2. Base yourself here if you want quiet and the Mnemba reefs close by.
Lives on seaweed farming and fishing2
Most visitors come for the beach, which Wikipedia calls the longest in Zanzibar2. The village faces a lagoon and a coral reef2, and its shallows are worked by the village’s seaweed farmers and fishermen.
What you’ll find in and around the village:
- The beach: long and sandy1, with the reef out beyond the lagoon.
- The reefs: coral reefs and shallow waters1 that support a wide range of marine life.
- Seaweed farming: one of the trades Matemwe is known for1, alongside its fishing communities.
- Muyuni Beach: north of the village, a 90-metre5 white-sand beach near Sunshine Marine Lodge.
Tides first
Can you swim at Matemwe beach?
Yes, around high tide. You can’t swim in the sea at low tide7, because the lagoon between the shore and the reef is very shallow.
No sea swimming at low tide7
Look up a tide table before you plan a beach day: Wikipedia advises checking tide schedules before you visit2. Some hotels work around the tide. Sunshine Marine Lodge has no direct beach access, so it built a pier into the sea5 where guests can swim at high tide.

Things to do in Matemwe
Matemwe is a base for time on the water: the area is particularly popular for snorkelling, diving and other marine activities1. Most of that means a boat out to Mnemba.
Mnemba: 30 minutes by boat9
Mnemba Atoll by boat
Mnemba Island is a 30-minute boat ride9 from Matemwe. The island lies opposite Muyuni Beach on Unguja’s north-east coast10.
Boat trips charge a marine conservation fee on top of the trip price. Non-East African visitors pay these rates:

| Marine conservation areas incl. Mnemba (MIMCA), per day | US$10 | US$5 (aged 5 to 15) |

A dhow at sunset
Traditional dhows make for a wonderful sunset cruise8, in Wikivoyage’s view. Ask your hotel what it can arrange.
