Before you go
Go in the morning or early afternoon, because the published closing times for the park don’t match.
Entry US$8–124
The entry fee also shifts depending on who you ask. Altezza Travel, whose quoted price includes a guide, advises confirming it with the park before you go.

Your ticket money feeds a revenue-sharing programme that has built schools and health clinics1 for the villages around the park.
What you'll see
The park gives you three things in one visit: monkeys, forest trails and a mangrove boardwalk.
Zanzibar's only national park1
The mangrove boardwalk near Chwaka Bay is a short drive from the forest walk6. Its raised wooden walkways pass above tidal channels6 and between dense stands of mangroves.
The cheapest fee in the table above includes an optional mangrove visit4. Chwaka Bay’s mangrove-fringed sea grass beds are important breeding grounds for marine life1.
Getting there
Take a dala dala, a chartered taxi or an organised tour: the forest sits about 35 km south-east of Stone Town, between the villages of Chwaka and Kibele2.
About 35 km from Stone Town2
The island’s main road linking the west and east coasts3 also connects to the park. Google Maps gives its address as Mapopwe5.
| Option | How | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Dala dala | Public buses 309 and 310 | Minibuses serve all the major villages very cheaply |
| Chartered taxi | Charter a taxi from Zanzibar Town | At the airport you can hail a taxi on arrival |
| Organised tour | Tours run from Zanzibar Town | Often combined with dolphin watching at Kizimkazi |
Wikipedia; Wikivoyage; i-escape (booking agent)
If you’re staying in Nungwi, at the island’s northern tip4, a tour with pickup is the simpler choice.
Flying in first? i-escape notes that Breezes Beach Club in Bwejuu can book a taxi transfer from the airport9 if you ask when booking, or you can hail one on arrival.
Booking a trip
The easiest way to visit is on a tour that sorts out transport, entry and the guide in one go.
Go Smart from US$40 per person11
The GetYourGuide tour below pairs the forest with Salaam Cave and includes pickup and entry fees.

See dates on GetYourGuideThe forest also pairs well with a spice farm visit on Unguja:
Got a car? Spice tours also run in the Kizimbani area4, and you can drive there yourself.
Make a day of it
The Zanzibar Butterfly Centre is the closest add-on, just down the road4 from the forest.
Butterfly Centre US$54
The Butterfly Centre is open 9AM-5PM, and its entry money pays village farmers who farm butterflies sustainably4. Further afield:
