Trips sold in Zanzibar fall into island day tours, safaris that fly you to a mainland park, and multi-day holiday packages. The tables compare what local operators and a booking site list for each.

Safaris from Zanzibar

A safari from Zanzibar means flying to a mainland park. Mikumi National Park is about an hour2 away by air, so it works as a day trip. The flight to the Serengeti takes 1.5 to 2 hours, and Go Smart sells that one as a 3-day4 trip.

Prefer to put a safari together yourself? Coastal Aviation runs daily5 flights between Zanzibar and the main national parks, and Arusha, the gateway to the northern circuit, has direct flights6 from Zanzibar. The guide to Zanzibar flights and ferries covers getting to the island in the first place.

Multi-day holiday packages

Multi-day Zanzibar packages bundle tours, fees and transfers into one price, so compare what’s inside, not only the headline figure. Go Smart’s 5 Days 4 Nights package, for example, includes airport transfers as well as guided tours, entrance fees and lunch7.

Match the trip to your plans

Which trip fits you?

Pick by time and interest: a half-day tour for a first taste, Safari Blue for the sea, a flown safari if you want a mainland national park.

  • Short on time, staying in Stone Town: the Stone Town City Tour takes half a day1, and Go Smart’s Prison Island trip runs 3–4 hours8.
  • Snorkelling and boats: Safari Blue comes with snorkelling gear and lunch3. Full dolphin tours leave Stone Town at 8AM and return at 5PM6.
  • Forest and monkeys: Jozani Forest, home to red colobus monkeys6, sits in Jozani Chwaka Bay, the island’s only national park9.
  • Safari and beach in one trip: the Mikumi day safari picks you up at 5:00 AM and drops you back at about 5:00 PM2, so the rest of your stay stays free for the beach.
  • Groups and couples: per-person prices drop as you add people. Go Smart’s Spice Farm & Jozani Forest tour falls to US$40 each for 3–6 people10.

Extras to budget for

What’s not included

Hotel pickup is the extra that catches most people out on day tours; on longer packages, flights and tips are usually yours to pay.

Entry insurance: US$44 per person13

  • Hotel pickup: Go Smart charges it according to where your hotel is3, and Blue-Green quotes it separately by distance1. Check Zanzibar hotels by area before you book, as your base sets the transfer price.
  • Flights and tips: the Restova package listing excludes international flights and tips, and suggests tipping US$10 per person per day11.
  • Card fees: Go Smart adds 3.5%12 to credit card payments.

Entry fees are usually in: Blue-Green’s prices include park, marine and site entry fees1, and Go Smart’s Safari Blue covers government fees3.

Booking tips: deposits, cancellation and pickup

Book with a named operator or platform, read the cancellation terms before you pay, and confirm pickup in writing. Go Smart’s terms get strict as your arrival date gets close.

  • Flexible option: the booking platform Lokalee gives a full refund up to 24 hours14 before departure on its Zanzibar tours.
  • Skip the street sellers: Wikivoyage warns against booking and paying for tours on the street in Stone Town, where touts push whatever pays them commission6.
  • How far ahead: Rhino Africa says Zanzibar trips can be booked as little as six to eight months ahead, but a full Tanzania safari circuit needs at least a year15.
  • Pick your dates: rain peaks in March, April and May, and July16 has the least. The best months for boat trips and beaches are worth checking before you book sea days.
  • Ramadan: it runs 8 February to 8 March 20276. On tours, avoid eating or drinking in public17 outside hotels and restaurants.

Questions people ask

Is the spice tour worth it in Zanzibar?

It suits you if the island's past interests you: Zanzibar, the Spice Island, was an important stop in the spice trade. Go Smart pairs a spice farm with Jozani Forest.

What is the best part of Zanzibar to stay in for tours?

It depends on the trips you want: Stone Town is the historic centre, Nungwi a resort town on the northern tip, and Kizimkazi on the south coast the starting point for dolphin tours.

What's there to do in Zanzibar besides tours?

Unguja has sandy beaches with fringing coral reefs, Paje is known for kiteboarding, and a traditional dhow makes for a sunset cruise.
